Bibi Jagir Kaur was the best choice as SGPC president. She is
not Kurimaar–Dr Dilgeer
Chandigarh – Sikh historian Dr Harjinder Singh Dilgeer has
said that Bibi Jagir Kaur was the best possible choice as president of the SGPC
in the present circumstances. He has brushed aside the criticism of her
opponents.
Today, the SGPC needed a strong, honest and experienced
president to save the SGPC from chaos. Today, the SGPC is passing through an
unprecedented crisis and a weak president could not have been able to pull the
SGPC out of this situation. A weak president won’t be able to solve even the
latest crisis of the tussle between some ‘senior’ employees of the SGPC.,
which was going to have very serious repercussions for the institution. Besides,
the SGPC has several uphill tasks to perform. This time this presidency will be
a bed of thorns.
Mr. Parkash Singh Badal should extend complete help to Bibi
by giving her complete freedom in taming the staff, as several of them are
corrupt like Mahants of the pre-1920 period and have a history of blackmailing
the previous presidents of the SGPC. Bibi shall have to face the wrath of the
Mafia type employees, their supporter SGPC members and the other people. It will
be a thankless job, which will shower awards of criticism, allegations as well
as restless days and sleepless nights. But, all this will be possible only if
Bibi wants to show some positive results and Badal allows her to function
independently.
Writer of 40 books on Sikh history and philosophy, Dr Dilgeer
has rejected the allegation that Bibi is Kuri Maar (daughter killer).
This term is used for aborting a female baby or killing a newly born female
child. As far as her reactions to her dead daughter are concerned, any Sikh
would have done the same. Though this case is still pending in a court of law
but I can say it with conviction that had I been in the place of Bibi Jagir
Kaur, I would have done the same rather I would have gone a step further. It is
religious duty of a Sikh parent (if he/she is a real Sikh) to stop her daughter
from marrying an apostate or a non-Sikh. Sikh (and Muslim) law allows one to
save one’s (rather Panth’s) honour. I am no yes-man of Bibi and I have
several differences with her but I am opposed to her unjustified criticism.

Golden Temple Stamp Not Issued by United States Postal
Service
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 7, 2004
Contact: Dr. Tarunjit Singh, Secretary General, 614-210-0591,
World Sikh Council - America Region (WSC-AR)
P.O. Box 3635, Columbus, Ohio 43210, USA
Phone: 614-210-0591, Fax: 419-535-6794
Recent media reports about the United States Postal Service (USPS) issuing a
commemorative Sikh stamp with a photo of Harmandar Sahib (commonly referred to
as Golden Temple) may be misleading. The WSC-AR has communicated with USPS and
was informed by a representative on September 3, 2004 via e-mail that the stamp
was not created or issued by USPS. The stamp was not reviewed, authorized,
issued, or released by USPS. It will not be available for sale at any US post
office.
The USPS has further communicated that the stamp has been issued by a private
company outside of the USPS. This is a private stamp that was produced by www.photo.stamps.com
at the request of Golden Temple Credit Corporation. Although the private stamp
can be used for postage within the US, it is not issued by USPS.
WSC-AR is a representative and elected body of Sikh Gurdwaras and institutions
in the United States. Its members include 28 Gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship)
and 7 other Sikh institutions across the nation.

Dear Baldev Sangha,
Sikhism is not a religion of miracles, rituals and
superstitions. Sikhism is not what some people want to exploit it as. There are
heaps of literature available on this web site. In case you need to read Guru
Granth Sahib, please download different files from
www.gurbanifiles.org
Which is the English translation of Guru Granth Sahib that
you find too heavy? On the other hand, please feel free to discuss any topic on
this web site.

Dear Sir,
I live in the States and have spent almost all my life
(45years) in the West. My parents are not what one would call devout Skihs but
they did raise me in an environment of the fundamental beliefs about being good,
treating people well, all religions are just different manifestations, , nor did
they believe in any of the "miracles" that were said to have been
performed. I have held to those beliefs all my life but have felt estranged from
the rituals that people go through whether they are Sikhs or Christians. Anyhow
when I read about the anniversary of the Guru Granth Sahib I thought I would
look up some information. I was disappointed in reading the English translation
it is too heavy going and I am not interested in "worshiping God" - I
don’t think God needs it,
I felt disappointed and wondered what it was that my parents taught me all
those years ago.
I am very happy to see the same basic principles that that my parents taught
me on your website.
I still do not agree with the rituals – but I do feel the
rightness of living as virtuous a life as I can, speaking up for people when
then do not do so themselves etc.
I am very grateful to my parents for what they have taught me and to you for
your website in confirming it.
Thank you.
Baldev

Sikhs discipline and Kesh (Unshorn
hair)
A Sikh is readily recognised on account of his unique symbols.
A Sikh is always visible in any crowd. A Sikh must be always be under
observation and under scrutiny, for compliance with the code of conduct laid
down by the Ten Gurus, from Guru Nanak Jee to Guru Gobind Singh jee. The most
prominent amongst the 5 symbols (5 Ks) of a Sikh are unshorn hair (Kesh), in
addition to Kirpan (a religious dagger), Kara (steel bangle), Kachehra (special
style of breaches or shorts) and Kangha (small wooden comb).
The questions are often asked of the relevance of these 5 Ks -
symbols in the modern world. It is also often argued if there is any place for
these symbols in present day life style. The answer is yes, it is still and even
more relevant and essential as it was over three hundred years ago, when the
10th. Guru , Guru Gobind Singh jee, made it essential for a Sikh or Khalsa to
adopt these symbols.
Amongst these five symbols, Kesh or unshorn hair constitute as
the most significant. The four Kurehts (transgressions or major violations) are
Cutting of Hair (Kesh); eating of Halal or Koshar meat ( slaughtered by ritual
slow death ); cohabiting with a person other than one's spouse; and using
Tobacco (smoking or chewing). In case one indulges in any of these four Kurehts,
then one has to be re- initiated or baptised by taking Amrit. Thus, Kesh or
unshorn hair is a must for a Sikh, in compliance of Sikh code of conduct (Rehat
Maryada).
Many Sikhs, specially living out of India say that, they could
be discriminated in jobs or by other communities, on account of keeping long
hair. That is not quite correct. In human society, there is always
discrimination amongst persons of different groups, on account of various
differences i.e. religion, colour, race, origin, clans, ethnic background,
wealth, club and society affiliation, politics, sports, dress, geographical
origin, language, appearance etc. Thus, being a Sikh is not the only type
discriminated by others in human society. Sikhs may start believing they are
being discriminated against. Admittedly, Sikhs stand out in any crowd, by virtue
of their distinctive appearance, but then, so are other different types, when
they are not amongst their own types. This could perhaps attribute to tribal
instincts of humans, when they feel more secure amongst their `own' type.
The Sikhs have to learn to manage this difference to their
advantage. The whole idea of Sikh identity is to be always visible, to be always
accountable for actions and deeds, to always be able to stand out and be counted
- never to be able to hide amongst the crowd. Thus, if a Sikh leads the life as
per the dictates and teachings of Ten Gurus and Guru Granth Sahib, then a Sikh
does not have to hide, as such a Sikh will always be proud to declare his
presence in any company. But some one who is not living by the code of conduct,
as expected of a Sikh, then that person may resort to hide. Such a person cannot
show himself as a Sikh, out of guilt and weakness. However, a true Sikh can turn
this to his advantage, as he will always be respected and trusted in any human
social environment, for his honesty, for his fairness, for his discipline, for
his respect for other human beings, for being ever ready to serve others, for
his presence not being a threat to others, for no one suspecting him for any
wrong doings, for his presence not being a threat to the environment and other
creatures, for his presence being a source of comfort to those in need of help
and service, for a Sikh being even ready to lay down his life for the righteous
cause.
All a Sikh has to do is to let other humans in the society know
of their beliefs and practices. That a Sikh believes in One Immortal Being as
the Supreme Authority of the Universe - for all humans and all creation; that a
Sikh respects all other humans as equals and respects all religions as different
paths leading to the One Supreme Being; that a Sikh earns his or her bread by
honest labour; that a Sikh believes in Truth and Truthful living; that a Sikh
always is there to share with those in need and is required to serve others.
Once a Sikh can explain all this to others in any human group, to any employer,
to any neighbour, to any colleague, to any authority, in any personal dealings,
then that Sikh cannot be discriminated or disadvantaged.
The employers require good workers, who work with honesty and
diligence, with their best effort. The employers require staff that do not
create trouble and are dependable, highly skilled and intelligent, and the
staffs that are amicable and can get along with others - customers and
colleagues. If a Sikh can do all this and also live by the code of conduct as
stipulated by the Ten Gurus, as stated in Guru Granth Sahib, then that Sikh
cannot and will not be at any disadvantage amongst any environment.
Thus a true Sikh will always be at a great advantage, being
most prominent and visible with Kesh - unshorn hair and symbols bestowed upon
him or her by our Guru Sahiban. All a Sikh has to do is to declare his or her
code of conduct and beliefs to others and live by it, always under watch and
always under scrutiny.
Come on fellow Sikh brethren and sisters, let us live as a Sikh
of Gurus and as a Khalsa and turn this blessing of Gurus to our great
advantage.
May Akal Purukh - Almighty Lord bestow upon you all strength and
courage to live as a true Sikh of Guru, with pride and prosperity! (The author

I was standing at Jalandhar station when my attention went
towards a Sikh youth standing near me wearing a Black turban having a long beard
and wearing a kirpan over his shirt looking similar to a terrorist. After a
while, one local train arrived, which was totally packed. The Sikh youth tried
to alight the train but failed to do so. Just then a voice was heard from the
back coach 'Sardarji Barah Baj gaye' The Sikh youth looked over at that voice
maker who was a young mischievous type of person and instead of showing any
anger made a smile towards him. The smile made was so enigmatic that it seemed
as if some type of truth lies behind it. Not able to resist my temptation, I
walked towards him and asked why did he smile at that person who teased him. The
Sikh youth replied, 'He was not teasing me but was asking for my Help'. I was
surprised with these words and he told me that there was a big history behind
that which one should know. I was eager to know the History and the Sikh youth
narrated:
During 17th Century, when Hindustan was ruled by Mughals, all
the Hindu people were humiliated and were treated like animals. Mughals treated
the Hindu women as there own property and were forcing all Hindus to accept
Islam and even used to kill the people if they were refusing to accept. At that
time, Nadir Shah raided Delhi in the year 1739 and looted Hindustan and was
carrying lot of Hindustan treasures and nearly 2200 Hindu women along with him.
The news spread like a fire and was heard by Sardar Jassa Singh who was the
Commander of the Sikh army at that time . He decided to attack Nadir Shah's
Kafila on the same midnight. He did so and rescued all the Hindu women and they
were safely sent to their homes. It didn't happen only once but thereafter
whenever any Abdaalis or Iranis had attacked and looted Hindustan and were
trying to carry the treasures and Hindu women along with them for selling them
in Abdal markets, the Sikh army although fewer in numbers but were brave hearted
and attacked them at midnight,12 O'clock and rescued women. After that time when
there occurred a similar incidence, people started to contact the Sikh army for
their help and Sikhs used to attack the raider's at Midnight, 12 O'clock. It
continued and became a known fact that at midnight, nearly at 12 O'clock, it is
very difficult to fight against Sikhs as the Sikhs get some Extra Power to save
Religion, Nation and Humanity. Nobody can fight and win against them at
midnight; this continues till now. Nowadays, these "smart people" and some Sikh
enemies who are afraid of Sikhs, have spread these words that at 12 O'clock, the
Sikhs go out of their senses. This historic fact was the reason which made me
smile over that person as I thought that his Mother or Sister would be in
trouble and wants my help and was reminding me by saying off 'Sardarji Barah Baj
Gaye' Pls do forward this mail to all ur friends so they can know about Sikh
history & its a humble appeal PLEASE don't make fun of RELIGIONS ! as every
religion is as pure as urs....

WHO IS STOOGE OR TRAITOR?
Balbir Singh Sooch
WHO IS STOOGE OR TRAITOR?
This subject needs
detailed discussion in historical perspective and not so easy to conclude to the
satisfaction of all. Under the present circumstances, this question is always
being asked only in context of minority leadership in India. Indian
Stooges mean those who are selfish and mean but honest and sincere to betray
their own people. The demerit of man to do unpleasant work is
directly linked with human weaknesses. It was and remained the yardstick for his
promotion in Indian System.
To make it further clear to understand, I quote an old but
true story, based on a conversation between an English Police Officer and Sardar
Gurbhajan Singh Gill, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Retired). Sardar Gill
narrated that once I approached my superior English Police Officer for a favour
for my ‘informer’. I introduced my ‘informer’ to the officer saying,
"Sir, he is a ‘good man’." After hearing this, the Officer
politely said, "Mr. Gill, I am ready to do favour
for him because he is your ‘informer’ but do not introduce him as a ‘good
man’. He is working to betray his own people. How can he be a ‘good man’?"
Then I (Gill) became speechless! A person, like the
officer who is morally upright and having regard for human values can only give
such an assessment. This system has changed to the worst as now it only
left to serve the Corrupt–Nexus. It is further more painful that stooges and
criminals are two sides of the same coin but may be in different form or
category.
All stooges should not be commented upon frequently as it
only helps them to flourish in the corrupt Indian mainstream.
I mean to say, ‘the stooge who faces criticism for his meanness and betrayal
from his own people is always further promoted in India’. It is the ‘acid
test’ of an Indian stooge (mean) or traitor (disloyal) to his own minority.
Recently, after becoming Rajya Sabha member from Haryana,
Tarlochan Singh and also Chairman, National Commission for Minorities gave
statement that minorities are to be given education so that these should not
turn to criminality. It means till date, as if only the minorities are criminal
in India. Very cunningly, he is justifying planned
injustice against minorities in India. That’s what Indian State unsuccessfully
tried to project in the past to cover up her excesses of brutality and genocide
of the minorities.
For the reasons quite apparent to you all, Tarlochan Singh will now hold two
high posts at a time. Similarly, I do always quote "Akalis"
(Planted Sikh leadership) in this context in my writings. Let us not forget that
this is the Indian System...... I presume that you people are aware of it. We
must pray to God to change the trend hereafter.
But, exceptions are always there like Hon’ble Captain
Amarinder Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab and the Prime Minister of India
Dr. Manmohan Singh. These personalities are self-explanatory. I need not express
or to give any details in their appreciation. Now, some may say, they are also
product of Indian State. Well, as they like, they may say so for their own
reasons. Indian democracy has failed but at the moment,
human perfection of a few, though only to some extent, could save this country
from disaster otherwise there is every apprehension that country may go in the
hands of looters and face consequences.
I bow before all those who have sacrificed themselves and
faced brutality in a hope for justice in India. I am sure their sacrifices will
not go waste. Definitely, one day justice, human values and spirit of self
dignity would prevail. We must pay respects, at this junction, to Hon’ble
Captain Amarinder Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab who seems religiously
active to check and undo planned injustice of Delhi darbar and else,
whosoever are assisting or supporting him whole-heartedly.
Now, WATER is the main issue. Let us not waste our energy in
discussing the role of Indian stooges. To my mind, they feel ashamed and stand
fully exposed but are not likely to mend themselves immediately as they are so
badly trained or taught to be mean.
Ultimately,
God or nature also plays ITS role, whenever things go
beyond the control of man.

Gurbani Conceptual Dictionary in English
A Conceptual Reference Dictionary called, "THUS SAYETH GURBANI" was
compiled by Pritpal Singh Bindra of Canada after a hard labour of more than
three years. This 500page hardcover book was published by Guru Gobind Singh
Study Circle, Ludhiana in 1998. It contained nearly 700 conceptual headings,
spread over more than ten thousand quotations from Sri Guru Granth Sahib. It was
awarded Akali Phoola Singh Book Award in 1998 by the prestigious Academi of Sikh
Reliogion and Culture and Religion, Dhillon Marg, Patiala, Punjab. Now with the
help of his son, Maninderpal Singh Bindra he has developed the same into CD. The
index contains about 700 headings and just a click on one, it takes you to the
quotations. The CD is distributed free but he expects the payment of
out-of-pocket expenses e.g. cost of CD, postage and packing which would vary
from country to country e.g. for Canada just $6. Pesonal callers in Mississaug
and Toronto etc. can telephone Mr. Bindra at 905 569 0515; it will cost just $4
It is must for young children growing in foreign lands The book, THUS SAYETH

Jar life—a perspective
A raagi was singing in front a very large congregation. After
a while he became silent, put his harmonium aside and pulled up a very large and
empty jar from behind and proceeded to fill it with rocks, rocks about 5 cm in
diameter. He then asked the sangat if the jar was full? They agreed that it was.
So the raagi then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them
into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the
open areas between the rocks. He then asked the sangat again if the jar was
full. They agreed it was.
The raagi picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He then asked once more if the
jar was full. The sangat responded with a unanimous "yes." The raagi
then asked for two glasses of plain water and proceeded to pour their entire
water into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand.
The sangat laughed. "Now," said the Raagi, as the
laughter subsided, " I want you to recognise that this jar represents your
life. The rocks are the important thing—your family, your spouse, your health,
and your children—things that if everything else was lost and only they
remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job,
your house, and your car. The sand is everything else. It's the small stuff.
"If you put the sand into the jar first," raagi
continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes
for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you
will never have room (time) for the things that are important to you.
"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your
happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Keep
obesity under control. Exercise regularly. Develop a habit of reading. Learn
Punjabi. Go out with your family to the Gurdwara and participate in the
community kitchen and do seva.
"Take care of the rocks first—the things that really
matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."
One of the sangat members inquired what was the significance
of water? The raagi smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you
that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room (time) for
reading and understanding Guru Granth Sahib. Else everything is just an excuse

Gurmukhi via Unicode
By Amrinder Singh
Ever since the invention of the computers, English has been
the predominant language. All software programs and Operating Systems such as
Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, and Unix/Linux are in English. Punjabi writers could
not take advantage of the Computer because of fonts. Since the 1990s, the boom
in sales Personal Computers allowed the average person to start and learn how to
use a computer. By that time, Punjabis had already begun to experiment with
Gurmukhi font development. Gurmukhi fonts such Anandpursahib, Sukhmani, and
fonts by Dr. Kulbir Singh Thind started to appear. All these fonts till now have
been using the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) which
is a standard adopted by International Organization for Standards (ISO).
The standards at that time adopted encoding from various
languages. But due to the limitations of computer memory and storage and 7 bit
(later 8 bit) structure, support for many languages was not included. So fonts
at that time had to be developed using the ASCII standard. Since there was no
standard for Gurmukhi script, font developers created their fonts without any
standard keyboard layout. Another problem with using fonts that are without a
standard is that users needed to download and install the fonts. Font conversion
was very time consuming when done by hand. To solve the limitations of 255
characters in ASCII and add support for all languages, Unicode was developed.
Unicode was developed to specify a code for every single
character needed by every human language. Instead of 8 bit scheme which only
allowed for (28 – 1) 255 characters, Unicode allows for 1114112 (216
+ 220) code points. 65,535 of the code points are reserved for
characters and 1,048,576 code points are reserved for Unicode Transformation
Format (UTF). This allows for applications that are not designed for Unicode to
allow users to use Unicode. Gurmukhi and English characters now have separate
code, where as in ASCII, Gurmukhi and English characters shared the code points.
Unicode allows for every single character to have its own unique code. This
gives huge advantages to other languages and allows the users to use those
languages just about every where they can use English. For this reasons Unicode
has been becoming very popular in the recent years.
Unicode allows users to communicate in writing without having
to worry about fonts just like in English. For example, when I was writing this
article, I did not worry about choosing which font to write in. I knew that
other users will be able to read this article without any problems. But if I was
writing an article in Gurmukhi using ASCII fonts, I would have to decide which
font the readers would have installed on their machines. But when using a
Unicode Gurmukhi font, users would not have to decide which to font to use.
With these advantages, users can write e-mails directly in
Gurmukhi. With ASCII, a user would have to type the message in a word processor
such as Microsoft Word and then attach it to the e-mail message. But with
Unicode, a user can type Gurmukhi in the e-mail message just like English with
the push of two buttons on the keyboard. (Alt and Shift by default). There is no
need for attachments now. Users can now even name files and folders on their
computers in Gurmukhi and other languages. Also, scanning software used to
convert printed documents into a word processor comes in hundreds of languages
but it is very disappointing to know that it does not include Gurmukhi support
because we did not have a standard for Gurmukhi font. But now there is hope that
software companies that make Optical Character Recognition software will support
Gurmukhi Unicode fonts are script based so they do not break up when used on a
website like traditional Gurmukhi ASCII fonts. In Unicode characters that take
up very little space, are given a space holder (Note the dotted circle). Ex.
ੀ ੀ ੂ ੁ ਾ. Web developers now don’t have to
worry about the visitors to the website having fonts instilled. As being a web
developer myself, I know this can be an issue even when using font embedding due
to Internet browser compatibly.
If we look in the Fonts folder in our computers, we have
hundreds of English fonts. No matter which English font a user chooses, they can
type the letter "A" using the same keyboard key. Now with the help of
Unicode, keyboard layouts for Gurmukhi are standardized by the Unicode
Consortium. Font developers can now create virtually unlimited number of fonts
without any keyboard layout issues as long as they comply the Unicode standard
for Gurmukhi. Click on this link for the standard http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0A00.pdf
Now with Unicode fonts, only the look of the characters in
the font will change, not the keyboard layout.
Now let’s discuss about the characters in the Unicode
standard. I have been reading letters posted by viewers on this website. Some of
the users have asked questions about the characters and the keyboard layout.
Unicode Consortium has give code points to Gurmukhi script.
Some of the characters that are used to type Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji are not
assigned. We can request the Unicode Consortium to assign these characters and
add those to the standard chart.
Another concern for most users is typing in a Unicode font.
Since the characters use a new keyboard layout, it is difficult to type in
Unicode. It is difficult to master that layout because the keys are everywhere.
Not only do you have to look at the Shift state but also Control Alt state. But
again this problem is very easy to solve. Microsoft allows a user to create
their own keyboard layout without altering the actual code. It just acts as an
interpreter between the actual code and the user defined code. I have created a
keyboard layout using phonetic layout for Unicode Gurmukhi fonts which is very
similar to Chatrik font family.
Lower Case
Upper Case
This is just my idea to solve this problem about Unicode
keyboard layout. You can install this on your computer and use this layout
instead of default layout. This will not alter the font code. You can
find the instruction and download link at the bottom of this page. Please test
it and let me know how we can improve it to suit our needs.
If you are using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 you can
enable support for Gurmukhi Unicode and choose the above keyboard. Please look
at the screen captures I have made and the link at the bottom of this page.
After enabling Unicode font support, you can type in Gurmukhi by pressing Shift
and Ctrl keys at the same time on the keyboard. You will not have to select any
font. It will automatically let you type in Gurmukhi using Raavi. However, you
can choose Arial Unicode MS or Saab.
One visitor of 5abi also mentioned about the look of the
Unicode fonts. By default on Windows XP and Server 2003, you will see the text
in Raavi unless another font is declared in Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML),
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), or the declared font is not installed. You don’t
have to use Raavi. You can use Saab or Arial Unicode MS.
However, all great things come at a price. I am not talking
about money here but about the disadvantages of Unicode. One of the biggest
drawbacks of Unicode is compatibility. Even though Unicode 1.0 was standardized
in 1991, the implementation has been a disappointment. For example, Unicode
support was implemented in Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 Professional and Server,
Windows XP, and Windows 2003 Server and Macintosh OS X. Support for Gurmukhi
Unicode came in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft Office also
supports Unicode starting with version 9 which is Office 2000. Also, older
programs do not support Unicode unless they have the option for UTF and the user
is using an Operating System that supports it. However, newer versions of the
same applications do support it without any need to change settings. So, over
the past few years, Unicode support and implementation has been growing
tremendously.
But when I say Unicode support, I mean reading and writing in
Unicode. Older version of Microsoft Windows such as 95, 98 and ME will still
allow users to view Unicode enabled websites using the Microsoft Internet
Explorer version 5 or greater, Netscape Navigator version 4.5 or greater, all
versions of Mozilla starting from year 1995, and Opera 7 web browser. So support
for Unicode is getting better and eventually it will replace ASCII.
I would like to thank Dr. Cahal, Dr Kulbir Singh Thind,
Kirpal Singh Pannu, Sukhjinder Singh, and Bhupinder Singh for working
hard to create better Gurmukhi fonts. Also, I would like to thank Dr. Baldev
Singh Kandola for adopting new Unicode fonts on his website. I would also like
to request webmasters of Gurmukhi websites to adopt Unicode as I will be doing
the same after I finish summer school. I hope that developers will now use the
Unicode standard and create fonts that look nice on the screen.
