I have a small problem. Until recently I used to be able to copy and paste your articles onto word document and print it either for myself or for my friends. However now I am not able to do so. When I copy the document and paste it into word it appears as squares - although the font is shown as Ravi. I am not very knowledgeable about computers. Can you please tell me why is this happening and how can I do what I used to do before.

You have written that for a common man vegetarianism or non-vegetarianism is same, but to become a special person , people have to give up non-vegetarianism. There have been many great people in Western World, including great physicists like Albert Einstien, Newton, Carl Sagan, James Watt, Pierre Curie who were non-vegetarian but did a lot of good for humanity.

At the same time in the philosophical/Political field, people like Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson known as the founding fathers of America, they were all non-vegetarian, so according to you they were inferior to people who are Vegetarian.

You are following double standards now. In order to give your view you have not even hesitated to quote Gurbani and distort it.

In this Verse "Maas" comes at the last, but before that comes sweet,

 Do you eat Sugar?

For, the information of all readers, Sugar obtained from sugar cane and beet root is mixed with the powder of animal bones for decolarization. So anybody eating sugar can never be a vegetarian in strictest sense.

Then you tried to distort Gurbani Verse to suit your needs as follows :

As many as are the grains of corn, none is without life. First, there is life in the water, by which everything else is made green.

Do you drink water? 

You can give up water as it has nothing to do with the society like you say in case of leather seats in buses. If you drink water then it shows your hypocrisy in understanding Gurbani and applying it to your daily life.

Then Guru Saab says :

"eh har ras van trin sabat hai bhagheen nahi khaye" (GGS,41)

The almighty lord pervades everywhere even in twigs of grasses, unfortunate people do not understand this and says " if you want to become special you have to become vegetarian".

Do you use soap to take bath and detergent to wash your clothes?

If yes, then it contains animal fat, called "tallow" which is bought from butcher shops and soap is obtained from a process called "Saponification".

Tallow is rendered mutton, beef or other bovine fat, processed from suet. Unlike suet, tallow can be stored for extended periods without the need for refrigeration to prevent decomposition, provided it is kept in an airtight container to prevent oxidation.

You can check with HLL (Hindustan Lever Limited), they use it in their soaps (Lux, Rexona etc).

Giving up soap in your house will be easy, as it is not related to society or "samaj" as you said.

Then about Guru Nanak eating meat, you said  "Guru ke kautak Guru Jaane", Gurbani says :

"Guru Sikh Sikh Guru hai eko Gur Updes chalaye"(GGS,444) means

The Guru's Sikh, and the Sikh's Guru, are one and the same; there is no difference in their doings and a Sikh strives to be like his Guru and both spread the Guru's Teachings.

Anyways, what are your views about Guru HarGobind hunting animals along with Sikhs as well, Here Sikhs are also hunting with Guru, Now is it "Sikhaan da Kautak"

When you hear advertisements or commercials, the first things shown are personal testimonies, before the product is introduced. You don’t know how to get it until later in on the program, and they never list the price until towards the end. Likewise, Guru Arjan Dev Ji first mentions the high rush of ecstasy he has received to quickly catch the listeners’ attention. He does not hint at the source of his bliss until later on in the shabad. Even before you share with others of your joy, you first experience it and then react; afterwards, you want to explain your behavior and spread the good news to others. People seek false sources for contentment and success by following the demands of their ego, pride, lust, attachment, and anger.

Why does Guru Ji say that he drinks the source? Why doesn’t he say he eats it or just takes it? The quickest means for the body to absorb liquid or nutrition is by hydrogenation intravenously or by drinking. If you have to eat it, then it takes longer to digest, and without liquids, the food will not digest at all. All living things demand water for survival. How has Guru given this in charity? The royal drinks are prepared by precise temperature heating and cooling to get the correct texture and flavor. So, Guru Ji has showed us what God has already done for us to benefit the relish of His Amrit.

When we realize all the beauty of His creation is His act of love towards us, then we do more than just appreciate it; we become intoxicated in the infinite acts of God’s hukam which controls every detail of existence. If we forget for one moment of God’s royal presence, then our mind will not be drenched with this knowledge. We must function in our daily survival routines with the awareness of God as we sleep, awaken, sit, stand, and walk to maintain satisfaction. Once we lose focus of God, then we become slaves to our five vices, and then lose our joy and peace. Then we start to act illogically, hurting ourselves as well as others. Without the gian wisdom of Guru Ji, we can never know how to prevent this tragedy.

Why do people seek peace? When we are at peace, we are able to concentrate better on our job, in school, and interacting with our family and friends. Our health improves, and our psychology remains stable. Memory and creativity also improve. Stress causes the opposite effect. Some drinks are prepared by heating first in a special furnace that controls specified temperatures with proper insulation. Only a trained expert in the field can operate it to guarantee perfect drinks from it. There are areas in our life that need to be purged, done away with. We have not the ability on our own to improve ourselves. The power to do so is within only because of the power, grace, and hukam of God.

Why waste your time and money on that which does not give your eternal satisfaction? Why let yourselves to be fed on your five vices. They are eating the wisdom and power of life out of you.

So what’s dangerous about drinking alcohol? After drinking, people usually feel pleasure and become talkative at first. The feelings are usually replaced by drowsiness as the alcohol is eliminated from body, and the drinker may become withdrawn. This pattern often encourages people to drink more to keep the buzz going. Immediate medical attention is necessary if a person becomes unconscious, is impossible to wake up or seems to have trouble breathing. Drinking a high concentration of alcohol in a short period of time can suppress the centers of the brain that control breathing and cause a person to pass out or even die. When people pass out, their bodies continue to absorb alcohol. The amount of alcohol in the blood can reach dangerous levels, and they can die in their sleep. Continue to check on someone who has gone to sleep drunk. Do not leave that person alone. It is dangerous to combine alcohol with other drugs, especially those that make you sleepy. Most alcohol is metabolized in the liver and then excreted. When someone drinks more alcohol than their liver can handle efficiently, the extra alcohol goes in the blood and body tissues. Your sex life can be harmed by drinking alcoholic drinks. Alcohol depresses nerve impulses. In men, it can prevent the pleasurable activity. In women, heavy drinking during pregnancy can harm the fetus. When the, baby is born, he may be very small and have little intelligence and have a deformed face. This condition is called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and babies born to mothers with an alcohol problem are at a high risk of suffering from this. The sad thing about drugs, and alcohol is one of them, is that the person loses the ability to reason. The chemical takes control over the body and mind. Just as drugs entice, addict, and destroy, so do the impure ways in which we think, do, and say.

Among young people, the short-term health consequences of smoking include respiratory and non-respiratory effects, addiction to nicotine, and the associated risk of other drug use. Long-term health consequences of youth smoking are reinforced by the fact that most young people who smoke regularly continue to smoke throughout adulthood. Cigarette smokers have a lower level of lung function than those persons who have never smoked. Smoking reduces the rate of lung growth. In adults, cigarette smoking causes heart disease and stroke. Studies have shown that early signs of these diseases can be found in adolescents who smoke. Smoking hurts young people's physical fitness in terms of both performance and endurance—even among young people trained in competitive running. On average, someone who smokes a pack or more of cigarettes each day lives 7 years less than someone who never smoked. The resting heart rates of young adult smokers are two to three beats per minute faster than nonsmokers. Smoking at an early age increases the risk of lung cancer. For most smoking-related cancers, the risk rises as the individual continues to smoke. Teenage smokers suffer from shortness of breath almost three times as often as teens who don't smoke, and produce phlegm more than twice as often as teens who don't smoke. Teenage smokers are more likely to have seen a doctor or other health professionals for an emotional or psychological complaint. Teens who smoke are three times more likely than nonsmokers to use alcohol, eight times more likely to use marijuana, and 22 times more likely to use cocaine. Smoking is associated with a host of other risky behaviors, such as fighting and engaging in unprotected sex. One in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit. Half of these deaths will occur in middle age. Tobacco smoke also contributes to a number of cancers. The mixture of nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette you smoke temporarily increases your heart rate and blood pressure, straining your heart and blood vessels. This can cause heart attacks and stroke. It slows your blood flow, cutting off oxygen to your feet and hands. Some smokers end up having their limbs amputated. Tar coats your lungs like soot in a chimney and causes cancer. A 20-a-day smoker breathes in up to a full cup (210 g) of tar in a year. Changing to low-tar cigarettes does not help because smokers usually take deeper puffs and hold the smoke in for longer, dragging the tar deeper into their lungs. Carbon monoxide robs your muscles, brain and body tissue of oxygen, making your whole body and especially your heart work harder. Over time, your airways swell up and let less air into your lungs. Smoking causes disease and is a slow way to die. The strain put on your body by smoking often causes years of suffering. Emphysema is an illness that slowly rots your lungs. People with emphysema often get bronchitis again and again, and suffer lung and heart failure. Lung cancer from smoking is caused by the tar in tobacco smoke. Men who smoke are ten times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers. Heart disease and strokes are also more common among smokers than non-smokers. Smoking causes fat deposits to narrow and blocks blood vessels which leads to heart attack. Smoking causes around one in five deaths from heart disease. In younger people, three out of four deaths from heart disease are due to smoking. We need to purify ourselves.

So how does Guru Ji teach us how to purify ourselves?

You should be more skeptical of the damage you can cause to your body by smoking, drinking alcohol, and drug abuse. You can also poison your body by allowing poison of pakandee teachings to enter into your mind. Other damages are caused when you are enslaved to your five vices.

Many people do not want to quit drinking alcohol, because they enjoy the flavor and the relaxations and good feelings it causes. They don’t care about the dangers it causes to the body. If they had a taste of the Amrit Bani of Guru Ji, they would give up their foolish habit and drink from the Word of God, the science of truthfulness as taught in Jap Ji Sahib

When we first understand Gurbani, then we taste the delight of Amrit Bani, craving more and more. Our lives begin to transform physically, mentally and spiritually. As long as we continue to merge with God, then we need not suffer any more. We learn to accept the nature laws of creation and learn how to cope with the many challenges in our complex lives. What does it mean to merge with God? Merging here means to sort out your differences with how reality operates under the hukam of God, just as Guru Granth shows us. If we have anger, depression, greed, ego, pride, jealously, then we have a distorted view of reality, which causes us to drown in the Bhavjal sea of troubles. We need salvation from evil.

What is the definition of evil? It means: morally bad or wrong; "evil purposes"; "an evil influence"; "evil deeds" morally objectionable behavior having the nature of vice, reverse of good that which causes harm or destruction or misfortune; tending to cause great harm, corrupt, selfish, greedy malefic: having or exerting a malignant influence Things that are not of God, that which harms or kills, the body as well as the spirit lack of goodness, emptiness. Salvation delivers us from all evils.

What is the meaning of salvation and evil? Salvation is defined as: .Preservation or deliverance from suffering, danger, destruction, difficulty, or evil. A source, means, or cause of such preservation or deliverance. In Christianity it means deliverance from the power or penalty of sin; redemption. The agent or means that brings about such deliverance. Restoration of our relationship with God through God's actions of reconciliation so that we can
be assured of God's love and care now and beyond death.

How does Guru Ji deliver us from evil? Guru Ji is not t

I have been a regular reader of the articles posted at your esteem website " SIKHMARG.COM". I was going through a article posted by Principal Gurmat Education Centre S. Surjit Singh Missionary. I am sure this article might have attracted a large number of readers as it was written to pay tribute to Panth Ratan S Mohinder Singh Josh . It was definitely a great loss for Missionary Movement and the Sikh community as a whole. It was to my utter surprise and great disbelief that Mr. Principal used this moment (when community was mourning the demise of great scholar) to settle his personal scores with S Harbhajan Singh (Chairman Sikhmissionary college ,Ludhiana). The breakup theory presented by Mr. Principal is also not substantiated by facts. For example monthly magazine subscription of 25000 (at the time of breakup), Two year correspondence courses that are running now are the only effort of Mr. Principal (as written by him in his article). This glossy picture painted by him of his deeds to undermine efforts of present Chairman SMC does not match the figures on ground in bold. This article written by him should have concentrated more on explaing the efforts and legacy of Panth Ratan S Mohinder Singh Josh rather settling his own personal grudges. I do respect Mr.Principal and appreciate his commitment and devotion with which he has contributed to improve the lot of Sikh community. If there are differences, that need be kept low and within one's heart rather than be thrown open in such disastrous way that damage control becomes impossible. Chairmain SMCLudhiana is respectable and greatly admired personality in Sikh circles, there is no point targeting him when one does not have substantiated facts explaining the progress of missionary Movement under the leadership of S Harbhajan Singh and camparative leadership beyond. I, at the end of it wish to request all the emminent sikh personalities of Sikh faith touse there intellect for the positive progress and betterment of Sikh community rather than muddlingin resultless confrontations. This is written , definitely not to hurt the feelings of anybody but a step forward towards "khalsa kaum on one platform against all odds".

Sikh American Student in Alabama allowed to Return to School with both Turban and Hair Intact

SALDEF defends Sikh convert's right to maintain the Sikh identity in Alabama Public High School

Washington D.C. – May 15, 2007: Last week, the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), the oldest Sikh American civil rights and advocacy organization in the country, successfully represented a 15 year old Alabama high school student who was allowed to return to school after being kicked out of Good Hope High School for keeping his hair uncut and wearing his patka – a religiously mandated Sikh head covering.

Earlier this Spring, while researching religion on the internet, Mr. Tommy DeForest came across the Sikh faith and immediately felt an affinity for the faith. After reading more about the religion, Mr. DeForest started to keep his hair uncut and wear a make-shift head covering. Upon trying to attend classes at Good Hope High School, Mr. DeForest was turned away at the campus gates and told that he would not be allowed on campus with his long hair. Mr DeForest was also subjected to repeated disciplinary punishment and finally suspended for his resolve to freely practice his faith.

A meeting was subsequently arranged between the DeForest Family and the school administration. At this meeting, Principal Anita Kilpatrich and the Superintendent for Education of Cullman County Hank Allen, adamantly supported their decision to deny Mr. DeForest from practicing his faith freely while attending public school. Additionally at this meeting, the suspension was extended indefinitely – effectively denying Mr. DeForest the right to public education simply due to his religious affiliation and forcing him to chose between his faith and an education.

Mr. DeForest contacted SALDEF with his concerns surrounding his ability to freely practice his faith, as guaranteed by the Freedom of Religious Expression principle within the United States Constitution. Mr. DeForest and his family were put in contact with local Alabama Sikh American community activist Rajinder Singh Mehta who provided Tommy with a patka and kara (steel bracelet), both mandated Sikh articles of faith.

"For a public school in our Nation to essentially tell a child to check his faith at the door and to force the student to choose between receiving an education and practicing their faith is a tragic violation of the principles that our country was founded on," stated SALDEF Managing Director Kavneet Singh. "This type of action is completely inexcusable and counter to the rich diversity found in the South and across the country."

SALDEF is pleased that Tommy DeForest has been allowed back in school while maintaining the articles of the Sikh faith. We thank the school and district administration for working with SALDEF to resolve this situation satisfactorily. SALDEF is hopeful that faculty and administration of schools across the United States will take steps to understand and inform themselves of the diversity of religious practices among their student populations, so instances like this will not happen in the future.

SIKHS AND SURNAMES

Guru Nanak Sahib established the Sikh religion based on equality, justice and noble deeds. During the span of 239 years from 1469 to 1708, all the aspects of Sikh Way of Life, including "Spiritual and Temporal" requirements, were fully developed. Whosoever accepted the Sikh Way of Life, had in fact, voluntarily abandoned his/her label of earlier caste and creed. Thus, all became equal without any distinction - None high or low. Furthermore, we are well aware that Gurbaani (gurÈbd - Divine Word) enshrined in the "Guru Granth Sahib" is authored under one Name: "NANAK". The Sikh establishments, namely, Darbaar Sahib, Akaal Takht Sahib, Gurduaras, Sangat and Pangat, indicate that all Sikhs follow one creed as brothers and sisters. Guru Gobind Singh ordained, "Recognise all human beings as one race". Accordingly, neither Guru Sahibaan nor their Sikhs attached any ‘surname’ representing their family name, clan, profession, tribe or village. On 30th March 1699, when Khalsa Panth was established through the "Amrit Initiation Ceremony", Guru Gobind Singh proclaimed that: "You are now re-born as Khalsa, having renounced your previous lineage, beliefs, caste, clan, country, profession, tribe or village. Henceforth, your ‘surname’ would be "Singh", for males and "Kaur", for females." Thus we all are Sikhs of the Guru Sahib provided we also obey their teachings with devotion, humility and sincerity.

History tells us that, during the 18th century, all Sikhs were known as "Singhs" e.g. Bahadur Banda Singh, Bhai Mani Singh, Shaheed Taru Singh, Baba Deep Singh and so on. In the 19th century, the same practice was followed, though, for reasons unknown, slight variation was made in respect of Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, Jassa Singh Ramgarhia, Hari Singh Nalwa and Sham Singh Attariwala. During the British rule, no one encouraged any such practice as is evident from the names of Sikh Martyrs {Roll of Honour} in respect of "Saga of Saragarhi, Saka Nankana Sahib and Two World Wars". However, after the Indian independence in 1947, this trend was reversed when some Sikh - leaders, with slavish mentality, began aping their Hindu masters and attached sub-caste appellation to their names, like Ahluwalia, Arora, Badal, Bains, Bhalaa, Bedi, Brar, Chadda, Chawla, Cheema, Dhillon, Dhindsa, Ghuman, Gill, Grewal, Kalsi, Kapoor, Kohli, Maan, Makkar, Narula, Neki, Nijjar, Punnu, Puri, Randhawa, Sahota, Sandhu, Sethi, Sidhu, Sodhi, Talwandi, Tohra, Vedanti, Walia, Wasu and so on.

Instead of adhering to the Guru’s Command, this malady has been on the increase. Although several persons have been raising their voice against this un-Sikhi tradition in the columns of Sikh magazines, there is hardly any improvement. On 28th April 1985, when the Sikh nation was encircled by the Indian armed forces, then Jathedaar of the Akaal Takht Sahib had directed the Sikhs, not to use or mention their caste or sub-caste with their names. But this decision of the five Singh Sahibaan remains unheeded. In this regard, views expressed by late Dr. Ganda Singh, and Dr. Alam Kaur appeared in the Abstracts of Sikh Studies [Oct - Dec 1997] are worth noting.

It will be highly appreciated if S. G. P. C. again considers this issue on a top priority basis and advise Singh Sahib of Akaal Takht Sahib for the issue of a fresh directions so that Sikhs attach only "Singh or Kaur" as a surname. Where, in any school or organisation, several persons may have the same name, distinction could be made by mentioning in brackets his/her address {village Palahi or Paldi} or work status like Bhai, Bibi, Mai, Jathedaar, Sevadaar, Gyani, Raagi, Kathakaar, Master, Dr., Editor, Principal, Lecturer, Professor, Sarpanch, Vakil, Veer, etc. (+ Jee).

This article is dedicated to three gianis who taught me viyakaram shudh paath: Giani Sant Singh Maskeen, Giani Jagtar Singh Jachak, and Giani Gurbachan Singh of Thailand.

Jaidev’s birth name was Pardharmrik who lived in the 12th century, born in the southern part of Bengal, in Bir Bhumi on the River Ajay. Others say he was born in Kindu Bilvã which may now be Kenduli, in the Birbhüm district of West Bengal, and, others say he was born in Kendüli-Sasan, on Prachi river, near Jagannath Puri in Orissã. His mother’s name was Rama Devi (Bani Devi), and his father's name was Bhojdev. He became an orphan at a young age, and Narninjan, a family friend, fraudulently took possession of his family’s wealth and property. Jaidev then started to compose and sing sad songs in grief of his parent’s death, but the wickedness of Narninjan caused him to separate himself more from society and worship Krishna deeply. He would avoid sitting under the shade of a tree to take the hot sun during his meditations. His life changed when a Brahman forced him to marry his daughter. She was a wonderful wife who sang Jaidev’s compositions. He then came to the realization of only one supreme God. He started composing hymns, singing to the one God and became a wandering preacher. Thus, three volumes of his compositions are known as 1. Darshan Raghav, 2. Geet Govinde, a lyrical poem in which the love of Rãdhã (soul or devotee) for Govinda (the Supreme Being), and 3. Chandia-Lok. Bhagat Jaidev became a famous court poet for Lachman Sain. Some believe that when Jaidev retired in his mother land, he was too old and weak to go bathe in the GangesRiver. One day the river was over flooded, causing a mild change in its course, close-by for him bathe. Bhãi Gurdas in his Vàrañ, X. 10, pays tribute to Jaidev’s loving devotion, saying that he attained the spiritual state where no distinction remains between "the devotee and the infinite." Jaidev taught that whatever a person is, it is only because of God's grace. Jaidev's love, reverence and devotion towards God became more intense and immense. Guru Arjan Dev Ji, in his hymn recorded on Ang 1192 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, tells us of Jaidev’s humbleness because he got rid of his egoist tendency: jYdyv iqafigE ahMmyv .. Bhagat Jaidev lived over 1,000 years ago, and his deep knowledge of Sanskrit Grammar is demonstrated here. This shabad is the most difficult to pronounce in the entire Guru Granth Sahib, as it is one of the shudh paath tests given by Sri Akal Takht for potentional paathees in Harmandar Sahib. Bhagat Jaidev here explores the phenomena of infinity. How can there be a beginning of existence? How do we define existence which is beyond our comprehension? If you study the straight line in geometry and physics, you learn that there is no beginning and no end. That the line is made of points that are infinitely fitting in between any two points. This demonstrates the science of infinity, stability, and truth. There are worlds upon words that have their own perspectives of the dimensions of their environments which we will never be able to conceive. The entire universe is an infinite library and documentary of information waiting to be studied. But we will never even begin to scratch the surface. One thing is sure; that there is a correct way and an incorrect way to learn truth. The incorrect way of learning truth would be to deny the very reality one lives in. If we deny the existence of God, then we are denying that anything exists at all. We end up with a clouded view and ill mind enslaved by our five vices. I remember in elementary school, I started learning the multiplication table. I was stubborn and did not want to memorize the simple times table. When I advance to higher learning, then to adulthood and independence, I realized that the need for memorizing the multiplication table is essential for all aspects of life, buying, cooking, measuring, and selling. I struggled in Algebra class, too. If I had mastered the fundamental subjects, I would have adapted easier to the demanding world of knowledge. But when it comes to learning the Guru Granth Sahib, most people have no interest or no time at all, due to working two jobs and taking care of the household. Guru Granth Sahib does not require studying hours every week. We can examine one shabad per week and explore its beauty, then experience it in our daily lives. If we neglect learning from Gur Gian, then we will struggle with the many serious challenges in live. The purpose of learning is to be successful. Guru Nanak devoted his life to education of truth for all people, because he knew that if we do not use our brains in truthfulness, they will rot in falsehood, infecting our bodies and souls and causing anguish to others.

When we notice the beauty of creation and the immense infinity of the natural laws of God’s hukam, we are awe struck. If you don’t know how to see the beauty of God manifested in His creation, then start learning the meanings of the Guru Granth Sahib. When we keep the awareness of the beauty and glory of God in our minds, then we are free from the control of our five vices.

We need only to focus on truthfulness, divine reality. Since there is only one reality, then there can not be other gods. When we learn of truthfulness, then we begin to see the beauty of God. The scales that cover our eyes start to flake off as we become devoted Sikhs students of Guru Granth Sahib’s perfect teachings. The benefits of the fullness of the essence God is the relish of the Amrit bani. Truth is the most valuable thing in the world. Everything that exists is supported by truthfulness. When we realize this, then we become humble, we can then win the battle against our stupidity, blindness, and five vices. We begin to truly enjoy life and creation. We become wise, fulfilled, complete, at peace, full of joy and courage. If we lack any of these traits, then we will not be able to battle our ego. We will not even be willing to make a progressive change in our lives. We may even not even be aware of our faults and illnesses.

Simran means to take the understanding of Guru J’s teaching and remember it, even if you have to repeat the lesson over and over again in your mind. By merely repeating God’s name over and over again without studying Gurbani we will accomplish very little. But staying focused on Guru‘s wisdom empowers us to function in the complex challenges of life, no matter how difficult the situations may be. When we contemplate on Guru Gian, then we automatically behold the beauty of God and His hukam. We begin to realize that birth, old age, and death are not tragedies in life, but natural events that are part of God’s hukam. Every citizen of a kingdom knows that as long as he obeys the rules of the king, then he will be successful, better protected, and never punished. Sometimes obeying the rules of a king require lots of self-sacrificing, like in high taxes. God does not require slavery from us. He is already super busy maintaining the entire universe to sustain us. God demands nothing from us, because He is self sufficient. We need not feel like be slaves to a cruel God, but we do need to obey the rules of His hukam in order to be complete. We need to meet God personally. If we study Guru Granth Sahib, then we get a jump start on what to learn and how to learn, and how to put our learning into practice. When we taste the Amrit of Bani, then we automatically want to be true devotees of God. We become fascinated with beautiful reality. Our lives become transformed. We no longer fear age, illness, and death. We learn to face our challenges rather that run away or ignore them for later. We learn how to plan our future. We learn how to control ourselves by staying in the protective Sanctuary of God which is done by learning, understanding, accepting, and doing all that Guru Granth Sahib teaches.

Nobody can escape death, but we all can avoid the fear of death. What is the fear of death? The fear of death is the pain of not knowing what will happen after we die. There is total disorientation and doubt that God may not be there to provide and protect for us as faithfully as He does in this life. But Gurbani teaches us that we should trust the power of nature governed by His hukam. Bhagat Kabir teaches us that God provides in this life and the next. Praising God means to consider His righteousness and beauty, as this builds up joy in us. When we experience this, then we automatically do good deeds. We begin to live in truthfulness, heart, word, and deed – the kirtan of the symphony and dance of God.

Things constantly change their molecular state, but God is always the same. So what is the meaning of "same"? It means same in identity, or unchanged in character or nature. It’s a wonder that things in nature change, but the laws of nature never change. The laws of nature are the supreme, infinite commands of God, called hukam. God plays the game, and we must move our pieces if we want to succeed. We need to know the object of the game. Nobody can play a game if he does not know how to play and how to win. The difference with God’s game and other games is that God does not play to compete with anyone. He has no reason to because as Mool Mantar says, He is inrBAu inrvYru "fearless and non-contesting". He has no enemies, for if He did, then He would have weakness or limits. People make themselves His enemies, but He considers no one His enemy. Having an enemy means having a threat; and God is complete and self sufficient sYBM. If we do not know how to move our game pieces, then we would only be competing against ourselves. You see, God wants us to play with Him, not compete with Him. He made the rules the way they are, to the best of our interests. If we move our pieces the wrong way, we suffer the consequences. But God does not want us to move blindly. He has included in His game the instructions which are very easy to learn and remember. No matter where we are in His game, His rules never change, and we must accept that. God plays His game with us with His infinite love and care. Why does God play a game? So what is the object of playing God’s game? How does one win? What is the meaning of winning a game? Why do people want to win so much? The definition of game is single play of a sport or other contest; or a contest with rules to determine a winner; or an amusement or pastime. I don’t think God’s game is one of competition with Him; His game is one of humbly showing off His pleasure to Himself by being gracious to His creation. God needs no game to play, but His nature teaches us is to play the game of His hukam, regardless who wants to follow the rules. The definition of win is to achieve victory or be the first in competition. People want to win a game because they want to be and feel complete. Some people know how good they perform, but they want to show off or prove it to others. Playing a game in itself is not evil. Some games are good for stimulating the mind in certain physical or intellectual skills. Other games are only for selfish profit when the players go out of control and risk everything they have. And some games are just for enjoyment, sharing the fun time with ones family or friends. So I believe this type of game is the game that God plays He is sharing His fun time with us. So remember, He wants us all to win. In His game, the competition is us against our five vices, the game of walking in truthfulness. Many people play the game of chess ÈqrMj and want to know the best move to make. Guru Granth Sahib teaches us clearly what moves to avoid and what moves to make. Don’t move your pieces blindly or carelessly. In Chess, the opponent entices you to attack his pawn, when in reality he has a catastrophic plan to put your king in checkmate. If you take his pawn, he will come back and destroy you. Your king piece represent your mind and sanity, your peace and contentment. When you lose your king, like your mind, life is over, you lose. But God is not playing against you, but playing with you to help you win.

This is one of the many complex rules of God’s game. If everyone would follow just this simple rule alone, then there would be more peace in society, less crimes, and divorces. When people live in harmony with nature, maintaining self respect while respecting others, then they will be able to lead to a successful life towards a successful society.

When you play the game of God, on God’s side, then you should not be engaged with acting contrary to His hukam. A team player who struggles against his own team mates should never face the competition, because he would only be looking at defeat. In God’s game there is no room for evil word or evil deeds. Evil is the engagement in self destruction, for it is the embodiment of the lack of anything good. Evil is the total opposite of good and contrary to the natural laws of the universe. Evil and hukam never meet. In order to be a player on God’s team, one must acknowledge the impurities of his mind and wicked deeds that he must give up and then he must thirst for righteousness. Playing against God always results in failure; however, cooperating with God will always make you the victor.

When a competition is over, the winner is praised. Usually there is a super hero (anchor man) on the winning team that played a major role in scoring the crucial winning points. If a weak, conceited athlete thinks he is the only one that brings the team to victory, then he would be proven a fool. When we reach victory over our five vices, we realize that the hero team player is the maker of the game Himself, Almighty God, who is so faithful, helping us along the way. When we focus on the greatness of God in thought, then this causes us to speak it, as well, and then it leads to practicing it in deed.

Why practicing Yoga? Today the main reason is for better health, and spiritual achievements. The power of Yoga enables one to live more fully in the world without being enslaved by over attachments to worldly things. Yoga was practiced in Bhagat Jaidev’s days by disciplining the body to tolerate uncomfortable positions, punishing the body while getting into a trance. People go to extremes to reach success, but in Sikhism, there is no need for extremism. We must balance our health, physique, diet, mind, and spirit by take the knowledge of Guru Granth Sahib’s wisdom. The only extremism we need is to remind ourselves to stay in touch with reality. Many people do not practice Yoga, but they are engaged in some sort of disciplining the body for improvement. Many people visit doctors, psychiatrists, physical therapists, and homoeopathists that offer great, expensive services. Some people visit psychics for guidance. Hundreds of dollars are spent for these professional services, and only a few get there money’s worth. Why do people take the long path to salvation, when there is a shortcut that is free of charge. Just as Vedas is valuable to the Brahmin, so is Gurbani vital for mankind. You make the choice: temporary, inferior deceptions or stable truths that teach how to be happy, healthy, and successful.

What does it mean to meditate on God? It means to take the wisdom of Guru Ji and learn it, then remember it, then live it, then blossom into the super human Sidhas, to be a wonder worker full of the power of God. The power of God is already in us from birth. If we lack the awareness of this and the "know how", then we can never improve ourselves to be an asset to society. We will remain a nuisance, a bothersome burden on others, infecting society with our personality impurities like one bad apple in the basket that spoils the rest. What is the power of God within us? It is simply the power of God’s hukam that is also in the universe. What God has given to us is sacred, and we use this power only because of His grace. It is the power of self control, the victory over our five vices, power to self heal physically, mentally, and spiritually. It is the power of spreading this good news to others to benefit, too. It is the strength for Saadh Sangat, the congregation of many with the realization and submission to Guru Shabad Yoga.

What does it mean to come to God as Bhagat Jaidev has? I am sure that Bhagat Jaidev intensively studied the science of Yoga and thus developed his own theory of what true Yoga is. It is not the practice of trying to please God with self inflicting, false piety, but it is the method of attaining perfection by living truthful. Guru Shabad Yoga is the practice of disciplining ourselves to live in truthfulness and putting it into practice. Bhagat Jaidev’s understanding and awareness of the presence of God in which His hukam rules has caused him to attain salvation. To have and to know is not enough; we must also be doers of Shabad. Just as Yoga is practiced, one does not master it by merely only understanding. One must strive faithfully. So it is with Guru Shabad Yoga. So let’s learn Shabad Yoga properly by committing ourselves to learn Guru Granth Sahib as much as we can, so that we can start disciplining ourselves. Let’s graduate from manmuk to Gurmukh, from ignorance to wise, from defeated to victorious, from dead to alive. The cost is free.
